100 Year Floodplain

The 100 year floodplain is the area the stream will occupy when a 100 year flood occurs.  The hundred year floodplain is an area of land that has a probability of 1:100 of flooding to that point in any given year.  In other words, in any given year there is a 1:100 chance that the stream will flood the 100 year floodplain.  The 100 year floodplain in the Darby Watershed covers approximately 24,700 acres.  Map 8 displays areas within the watershed that lie in the 100 year floodplain.  In recent years portions of the Darby Watershed have seen floods that extend to or beyond the defined 100 year floodplain.  The accurate identification of these areas is critical to the protection of human health and well-being as flood intensities and frequency increase.
