9. Livestock Access
The history of the Darby Watershed indicates that
livestock were often allowed free access to streams for watering and cooling in
summer months. However, in an effort
to improve water quality conditions, this practice is not recommended.
Livestock can have a water quality impact on a smaller stream such as
sedimentation and bacteria. Through
survey work by Ohio EPA and the watershed coordinator, sections of
Logan
,
Champaign
, Union, and
Madison
County
have areas of unrestricted livestock access along Spain Creek, Sugar Run,
Little Darby Creek, Treacle Creek, Proctor Run, and Spring Fork.
Financial assistance exists to fence cattle away from the stream, to
provide an additional watering source, and stream crossings if needed.
Further work will be conducted on this issue in the future.
